What Is a BMW DME Bench Unlock?
Your BMW's DME (Digital Motor Electronics) is the brain of the engine. It controls everything from fuel delivery to boost pressure. To tune your BMW using platforms like Bootmod3 (BM3) or MHD, the DME needs to be able to accept a new flash over the OBD port.
The problem? BMW began locking their DMEs from the factory starting around 2018, and the issue became widespread by 2020. If your DME has been locked either from the factory or through a BMW dealer software update, you'll see a warning like "DME Unlock Requirement: BENCH" when you connect Bootmod3 or MHD to your car.
That means your DME needs to be physically removed from the car, connected to our specialized bench equipment, and unlocked before any tuning can happen over the OBD port. That's exactly what we do.
Which BMWs Need a DME Bench Unlock?
The following engines and models commonly require a bench unlock or full DME unlock before tuning:
B48 (4-Cylinder Turbocharged)
BMW 230i, 320i, 330i, 420i, 430i, 520i, 530i, X3, X4 (2018 to 2020 build dates) Any B48-powered BMW with a DME build date before June 2020 that shows a bench unlock requirement in BM3 or MHD.
B58 (6-Cylinder Turbocharged)
BMW 340i, 440i, 540i, 640i, 740i, 840i, Z4 M40i, X3 M40i, M340i, M440i, Supra A90 (2018 to 2020 build dates) One of the most popular tuning platforms on the market. B58 DMEs with a build date before June 2020 require a bench unlock before BM3 or MHD can flash a tune.
N20 / N26 (4-Cylinder Turbocharged)
BMW 228i, 320i, 328i, 428i, 520i, 528i, X3, X4 (earlier F-series) Older platform but still commonly requiring a bench unlock if the DME has been updated or re-locked by the dealer.
N55 (6-Cylinder Turbocharged)
BMW M2, 335i, 435i, 535i, X3 M40i (F-series) N55 DMEs can be locked and require bench unlocking before OBD flash tuning with MHD or BM3.
S55 (BMW M3, M4, M2 Competition)
BMW F80 M3, F82 M4, F87 M2 Competition The S55 in the F8X chassis is one of the most tuned engines in the BMW community. If your S55 DME has been re-locked by a dealer software update, a bench unlock is required before BM3 or MHD can flash the car.
N63 / S63 (V8 Twin Turbo)
BMW M550i, 750i, M5 F90, M8, X5M, X6M (pre-June 2020 build dates) Important note: V8 BMWs with the N63 or S63 run two DMEs, one for each bank of cylinders. Both DMEs must be bench unlocked for tuning to work. We handle both units in the same service visit.
S58 (BMW G80 M3, G82 M4, G87 M2)
BMW G80 M3, G82 M4, G87 M2 (pre-June 2020 build dates) The S58 is BMW's latest high-performance engine and is fully supported for bench unlocking on cars with DME build dates before June 2020.
What About Post-June 2020 BMWs?
BMWs with a DME build date of June 2020 or later use a newer, more restricted bootloader that was not able be unlocked with traditional bench equipment. These vehicles USED to require a FEMTO unlock or Autotuner unlock, which is now unlockable up to 2026.

Why Does My DME Get Locked in the First Place?
There are two main reasons this happens.
Factory locking. BMW started locking DMEs from the factory on newer production vehicles to prevent unauthorized tuning.
Dealer software updates. This is the most frustrating one. When you bring your BMW to the dealership for any service, BMW's diagnostic software (ISTA+) automatically recommends and in many cases performs a software update on the DME. That update re-locks the DME, even if it was previously unlocked. This can happen without your knowledge or consent.
The fix? Don't let the dealer update your software if you plan to tune. And if they already did it, come see us.
