If you own a 2021 or newer BMW and have been trying to tune it, you already know the frustration. You connect your tuning app, it tells you the DME is locked, and then you find out your only option is to pull the DME and ship it to Finland or wait weeks for a solution. Not anymore.
Tysautoworks Performance now offers in-house DME unlock service for 2021 and newer BMWs right here in Connecticut. You bring the car in, we handle everything the same day, and you leave ready to tune.
Why 2021 and Newer BMWs Are Different
BMWs built after June 2020 use a more advanced hardware security layer inside the DME that prevents the traditional bench unlock method from working. The bootloader on these newer units is locked at a deeper level than earlier models, which is why most shops either turn away 2021 and newer BMWs or tell you to ship your DME overseas.
This is not the same situation as a pre-2020 BMW that just needs a bench unlock. The security architecture on these newer DMEs is fundamentally different and requires a different unlock process entirely.
The good news is that tuning platforms like Bootmod3 (BM3), MHD, and MG Flasher all support these newer vehicles once the DME has been properly unlocked. The unlock itself does not tune the car. It simply opens the door so your tuning platform of choice can do its job through the OBD port.
Which 2021 and Newer BMWs We Support
We currently offer in-house DME unlock service for 2021 and newer BMW vehicles running the following engines:

What the Process Looks Like at Tysautoworks
When you bring your 2021 or newer BMW to us in Connecticut, here is what happens:
Step 1. Drop off your car. No need to remove your DME yourself. We handle that. We locate the DME for your specific chassis and remove it safely.
Step 2. Full backup. Before anything else, we create a complete backup of your original DME data. Your factory calibration is preserved and can always be restored if needed.
Step 3. DME unlock. We perform the unlock using our in-house equipment. This enables your DME to accept OBD flash tuning via your platform of choice including Bootmod3, MHD, or MG Flasher.
Step 4. Reinstall and verify. The DME goes back in the car. We verify the unlock was successful before you leave.
Step 5. You leave ready to tune. Connect your tuning app, register your vehicle, and load your tune. The unlock does not tune the car. That part is up to you and your tuner.
Why Connecticut BMW Owners Should Stop Shipping Their DME Overseas
For most 2021 and newer BMW owners who want to tune, the standard advice has been to ship your DME overseas, wait for it to come back, and hope nothing gets damaged in transit. That process typically takes one to two weeks minimum, involves removing the DME yourself, packing it carefully, paying international shipping both ways, and trusting a company you have never met with the brain of your engine.
We eliminated all of that. Tysautoworks Performance does this service in house, in Connecticut, the same day you bring the car in. No international shipping. No waiting. No wondering if your DME is going to show up in one piece.
What Happens If a Dealer Updates My Software After the Unlock
This is one of the most common questions we get. The answer is straightforward. If a BMW dealer performs a software update on your car after the DME has been unlocked, the update can re-lock the DME. This is true of all BMW DME unlocks regardless of the generation.
The simple solution is to avoid dealer software updates after your DME has been unlocked. If your dealer asks to update your software during a service visit, you have the right to decline. If it does happen and your DME gets re-locked, the unlock process can be performed again.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does my 2021 or newer BMW need a DME unlock to tune it? Yes. BMWs built after June 2020 with the B48, B58, or S58 engine require a DME unlock before any OBD flash tuning can be performed with platforms like Bootmod3 or MHD.
Is this the same as a bench unlock? No. Traditional bench unlocking works on BMWs with a DME production date before June 2020. Vehicles built after June 2020 use a different, more secure bootloader and require a separate unlock process. That is what we offer for 2021 and newer models.
Does the DME unlock tune my car? No. The unlock is a one-time process that enables your DME to accept OBD flash tuning. You still need a separate tuning license such as Bootmod3 or MHD to actually tune the car.
Do I need to remove my DME before coming in? No. Bring the whole car. We handle DME removal and reinstallation as part of the service.
What tuning platforms work after a 2021 and newer BMW DME unlock? Bootmod3 (BM3), MHD, and MG Flasher are the most commonly used platforms after a successful unlock on these newer vehicles.
Will this unlock work with the Toyota GR Supra A90? Yes. The A90 Supra uses the B58 engine from BMW and is supported by this service.
Can my DME get re-locked after the unlock? Yes. If a BMW dealer performs a software update after the unlock, it can re-lock the DME. Avoid dealer software updates after your unlock is complete.
How do I know if my BMW is eligible for this service? The key factor is the DME production date, not the vehicle's build date. Your DME needs to have a production date of July 2020 or later to qualify for this service. We can verify your eligibility when you bring the car in.
